The workshop will focus on how to recognize the components that affect the pediatric patient's response to trauma, including discussions on complex trauma cases.

The workshop is designed to meet the educational needs of primary, acute and critical care physicians, advanced practice nurses, physicians assistants, staff nurses, paramedics, Child Life specialists, social workers, family therapists and rehabilitation therapists who care for pediatric trauma patients.

Presenter:  Peter Polatin, M.D., MPH:  a past Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Global Mental Health at the George Washington University School of Medicine and a senior health advisor for the DIGNITY Institute Against Torture, located in Copenhagen, Denmark until the end of 2015. He has recently returned to Dallas and is developing a public sector interagency consortium to serve the large number of unaccompanied refugee minors in North Texas.

Inaugural Summit on LGBT Aging for Tarrant County - Including Presentation of the Documentary "Gen Silent"

The Inaugural Summit, being held by the Coalition for Aging LGBT (CfA), will shine a light on the needs of the aging LGBT communities in North Texas.  Speakers will address these needs from a national, state, and local perspective.


The documentary "Gen Silent" will be presented at 3:30 pm by The Coalition, partnering with QCinema and the City of Fort Worth Human Rights Commission, as a part of the Summit.

The Program

In this interactive course, participants will explore emerging research about how various brain regions work together during the decision-making process. Brain imaging and decision-making studies will be used to explain how we determine truth, intelligence, threat, and competence.

The course will offer solutions and tools to reduce or prevent the unwanted effects of unconscious association in decision-making.

The course will pinpoint the areas where discretion is utilized and will focus on ways to increase fairness guided by science.

The Speaker

Kimberly Papillon is a nationally recognized expert on decision making in law, education, business, medicine, and social services. She has served on the faculty of the National Judicial College since 2005. She has delivered over 200 lectures internationally on the implications of neuroscience, psychology and implicit associations in the analysis of decision making.

Who Should Attend

Judges, attorneys, law enforcement, health professionals, educators, social workers, anyone interested in learning more about the science behind how we respond to people and how we make decisions related to the clients we serve.
